Gay Rights and British Sitcoms

Today was special for two reasons:
1) It was the beginning (finally) of our very belated Spring Break!

2) This:
"National Day of Silence is a day of action in which students across the country take some form of a vow of silence to call attention to the silencing effect of anti-LGBT bullying and harassment in schools. Through their activities students can speak out against harassment and organize for change for their schools and communities."

I have issues with the Day of Silence, though. First of all, it's just not very effective, especially when it's just a dozen GSA kids, being Really Quiet For The Day in a school with a population of over 3,000 students. Remaining silent sounds solemn and thought-provoking, but, in my experience, it's just really awkward. Wouldn't it be more effective if we had a 'Speaking-Out Day' or something?

I guess, I guess, I guess my main issue with the DoS is that when people ask why I'm silent, I can't really explain. The speaking cards that they hand out can only say so much, so you can't really have a discussion about gay rights with people who really need convincing.
Oh well. I've heard cases where it has changed some people's opinions, too. Anyway, I participated--- wore my red and slapped a DoS sticker on my face and didn't talk. I didn't get harassed much. Probably because, in someone who speaks so little anyway, the gesture goes unnoticed.

Does your school have the Day of Silence?
Do you participate?

I wore this... a while ago, but not today.
Dress and top are were my mother's; the belt came on a pair of jeans.

Inspiration: Hyacinth Bucket (ahem, pronounced Bouquet), from Keeping up Appearances!

You have to admit, she's pretty fucking fabulous.

Perhaps the reason I'm so bad at being an Opinionated Young Radical is that I dress like a conservative old British lady...?

I wanna be an action hero...

...but only if I don't have to wear heels.

La Femme Nikita, 1990, Luc Besson, precursor to Obviously The Best Action Film Ever (The Professional, of course.)
Although, I'm not sure what to think of Nikita. First of all, there's the sexualization of this violent woman, and of violence in general— basically, the plot is, this girl is forced to become a SuperSecret spy of some sort, and she has to hide her SuperSecret identity while remaining cute, sexy, and stylish? The plot is shallow, and there aren't even explanations for her SuperSecret "assignments"— the whole movie seemed like someone just needed a thinly veiled excuse to have a pretty girl killing some people.
And then!! Nikita is pretty much a classic manic pixie dream girl: she's mysterious, she's kinda craaay-zaaay!! and she's a deadly assassin, yet she has a childish personality. So, sure, she kicks ass, but she's still a male fantasy.

But I did like many things about this film. Like, yeah, the clothes. Little black dresses, cherry-print underwear (!!!), that cutout hat that I can't find pictures of anywhere... and the whole androgynous look. I have this really big thing for shoulder-padded androgynous jackets.
:)
And if you look at the fifth picture down (I know she's really small and it's hard to see), she's actually wearing these black lace tights that've been so ubiquitous lately. Awesome.
I also thought Anne Parillaud's acting was quite good, even though her overall character was *cough cough cough* *ahem*. She's lovely.

Ooh, that was a big block of text.
I now abruptly segue into another subject— some music I've been addicted to lately:

(I'm sorry, but the guy in this video is so gorgeous. His name is Fares Fares.)

Volemort's Choir!

And finally, a beautiful cover of "Where is my Mind"

Flowerbrains

Ew, I haven't posted in aaages. Sorry. It's just that when I get out of the swing of blogging, I get kind of blaaaaaaaaaaghghghg and everything's just blaaaaaaaaaaaaghggh, and, yeah, this happens.

Hennyways.

I went on a school trip to Los Angeles last week! It was reasonably fun (except for the social interaction thing, which was awkward), and I met Elvis!

And when Darth Vader touched me, my brains exploded.

(Hollywood!)

(at LACMA)

So, so, so, there's my outfit. The quality's kind of bad because I had to steal these from the pictures my friend put up on Facebook...

Can you see the necklace okay? I would like to draw your attention to the necklace I made this by cutting up a pair of nylon stockings and knotting the bits together.
DIY!! Liberate the women!! (Although I do often wear nylons. And I think I read somewhere that nylons freed women from girdles and all the ancient unwieldy underwear contraptions of yesteryear. But, well, anyway.)

Also featuring:
-top from please don't ask me I don't remember where I get most of my clothes
-skirt made my grandmotherfuckinggrandmom
-tights and shoes from ????????it's a mystery!????????????

We also went to Olvera Street that day, which was... not that cool (lots of stands selling Mexican-ish kitschy stuff for tourists), but… I bought a lime green ukulele (which, upon further inspection, turned out to be a tiny guitar), and a wooden bracelet decorated with Catholic-y pictures. It’s a smidge too small and kind of falling apart, and I rather regret the purchase (WAY OVERPRICED, LADY!!) but, like, it’s still kind of cool?

So, I'll go learn how to play that damn guitar and put something cool together with that fucking bracelet, and hopefully blog more consistently; and I encourage you, in the meantime, to"Honk 4 Jesus!!!" and tell me how awesome I am.

Barely Legal

Since it was my birthday recently, I thought I'd...

And also:

Cibo Matto, everyone!! So much nineties Asian awesomeness.

The pictures should link back to their sources, except for the last one, which is my own. It's from their video for Sugar Water. Check out that snowflake dress! And those sunglasses!! AHHHHHHHHH

And, if you're wondering: I turned eighteen, and, yes, I had a nice day. There was this girl in my Econ class who turned eighteen on the same day, so when everyone sang "Happy Birthday," I pretended that they were also singing for me. It was awesome.

And. Yes, I am aware that you could just Google image search "Cibo Matto" and come up with these pictures.

Er...

Dying slowly, descending into madness, gibbering to the end.

The sweet pixie nerd. You know those girls whose ears stick out of their hair like elves, who wear long pants that are awkwardly short, whose legs are so skinny that none of their jeans fit right?
You know what I'm talking about?

NOT THIS OH GOD NOOOOO

They hide behind glasses and books. They're really sweet and quiet, but they do have a sense of humor. They're uncommonly intelligent. And they don't realize how pretty they are.
They do eventually, though. All of them do. They get haircuts and start wearing nicer clothes, and... it makes me kind of sad?

(Scarlett Johansson, just in terms of looks, comes to mind... kind of plain-Jane skinny.)

Hennyways. Under a haze of sleep deprivation and caffeine, I cut my own bangs last night. I don't know what I was thinking, man. I look like a dim-witted dope with bangs.

I think I was imagining a tasty combination of the pixie nerd with the nineties wispy bang—
WITH THE ADDED BENEFIT of hiding my very pimply forehead.

But, I don't know. Somehow, when I wear my glasses, it looks more like a combination between "One Of My Relatives From The Country" and "That Awkward Friendless Kid Who Always Smells Like Cheese."
I feel like I'm pretending now. I know I'm too materialistic and shallow to lead that ascetic, rather innocent lifestyle that I imagine would befit a math major.
Sorry. Sorry if this doesn't make sense and all. I'm rambling. My brain comes up with all these obsessive thoughts at night, and I'm just like, "...Yeah! That makes sense!" And, like, I blog about it. Because, like, all of my opinions, like, totally matter. And they need to be shared with, like, the whole world. I'm sure you agree.

You guys should totes honk for Jesus guys He deserves to be honked for 'cuz he's a great guy
omg
i need to just like just stop like right now
before i become completely incoherentettttttzzzxoxoxoxo

Afternoon magic

I was listening to the radio this afternoon when I heard the magical dulcet tones of the Mulleavy Sisters beaming out of my earphones right into my soouulllll. I nearly jumped out of my chair and did a happy dance.
It was an interview on DnA (a design and architecture program), mostly on how they did the costumes for Black Swan. They also talk a bit about how they started Rodarte, and how they got in to fashion, and about horror films and such.

They talk about blood in such a beautiful way.

I dig that.

You can listen to the interview here. I highly recommend it--- there are also some gorgeous, gorgeous pictures of their other work up there too.
I'll leave you with my two favorite ones:

Wait till Father hears about this

Upper-class prepster Slytherin bitch.

Look at this sweater. LOOK AT IT. I found it in a stack of my ma's old stuff--- it's pretty magical.

Observe: with only navy blue and white, it would be the typical trophy wife's wannabe French nautical sailor, "I belong to a country club" business. But with the green, it's awesome. It even has shoulder pads.

And now we present: The ring. A friend dubbed it the "Slytherin class ring" once---

I got this baby at Disneyland (have you ever been? The people are so nice it's creepy). It's made of glass so whenever I wear it to school, I get ludicrously paranoid that I'll scrape it against something and scratch it up.

Also featuring: wool Land's End skirt, and Revlon lipstick in Black Cherry.

P.S. DUMBLEDORE LIVES!
